One of the best things about living in Northwest Arkansas is the accessibility to the great outdoors. While area amenities such as concert venues and museums are certainly a draw, it’s no secret that residents of the Natural State want to get out and explore. Lucky for us, Northwest Arkansas has many options for outdoor enthusiasts including the Razorback Regional Greenway.
The Razorback Regional Greenway is a 36-mile trail that extends from the Bella Vista Trail in north Bentonville to south Fayetteville. The trail links together dozens of popular community destinations including shopping centers, arts and entertainment venues, the University of Arkansas campus and the corporate headquarters of Walmart, JB Hunt Transport Services and Tyson Foods. By linking together popular destinations, the Razorback Greenway provides a new recreational option for visitors and residents.
The Razorback Regional Greenway cost approximately $38 million to construct and was supported in part by the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission (NWARPC). In 2000, the NWARPC began a long-range planning process and formed a task force that conducted public meetings and worked with local communities to bring about this vision. In November 2010, a $15 million federal transportation grant was awarded to the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission to fund the project. An additional $15 million grant was donated by the Walton Family Foundation and the remaining funds were provided by the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission and through city funds. Fifteen years after the creation of the idea, the vision became reality and communities and residents in the region are starting to see the benefits.
With seasons changing and temperatures lowering in the evenings, the Razorback Regional Greenway is a great option for people looking to spend time in the cooler weather. This outdoor activity option provides yet another item to the long list of reasons why Northwest Arkansas is a great place to live and work.
